Waterfront in Whitehall, Michigan
Know the water before you buy the view. I go and read the frontage, the bottom and the access myself.
One Address, Four Waters
A Whitehall address can put you on White Lake and the channel, on the White River, on Duck Lake, or out toward Lake Michigan west of the city. Four waters, and they behave nothing alike.
Whitehall and Montague together are what locals call the White Lake area. It is one place with two names, sitting on opposite shores, and anybody who tells you they are two unrelated towns has not spent time here. Whitehall is the south side.
An honest note about the geography, because somebody will check a map. The city of Whitehall sits about five miles inland from Lake Michigan. What reaches the big lake is the address, not the city limits, which is the normal way things work out here where the footprint is rural rather than dense.
Where would you like to start?
Duck Lake Does Not Take You to Lake Michigan
This is the single most useful fact on this page, and it is the one a buyer from out of the area cannot possibly know.
Duck Lake sits beside Lake Michigan, joined by a shallow channel, and a dam under the Scenic Drive bridge blocks the route between them. So Duck Lake runs into Lake Michigan as water, and does not as a boat route. If the picture in your head involves running out to the big lake from your own dock, Duck Lake is not the lake for it.
That is not a mark against Duck Lake. It is a quieter, more contained body of water, and for plenty of people that is the whole appeal. It is just a completely different purchase from White Lake frontage, which does have a route out through the channel.
Decide which of those two you want before you shortlist anything, because the price does not tell you and the photographs certainly do not.
In their words
In their words
I had a very specific idea of what we wanted. An unspoiled piece of lakefront land on a wooded lot. I quickly learned that finding such a property is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Tamara diligently stayed on the search for our dream property and was always on the lookout for us... When that perfect property finally came up, Tamara knew it was the one. She called us from her car urging us to come up and see it immediately.
The White Lake Side of Town
Downtown Whitehall runs along the water, and Goodrich Park with the White Lake Municipal Marina is the piece of it most people picture: a path along the water, a splash pad, a playground and a picnic shelter, with fifty slips out front.
Stand on that walkway and the marina and the houses you are looking at across the water are the Montague side. The Whitehall side of the water is Tannery Bay, named for a tannery that stood there until it was torn down decades ago.

Along the shore from there, a Whitehall waterfront purchase usually comes down to three things: how much of the frontage you can actually use, what the bottom is like where you would go in, and whether the wind sits on your stretch in the afternoon. All three are readable in person and none of them are readable from a listing.
What I Check Before You Drive Up
This is The Lakeshore Recon Method, and on four different waters it earns its keep.
Which water you are actually on, and what that water can and cannot do. On a Whitehall address that is a genuine question rather than a formality.
Usable frontage against the listed figure, and where your lines run.
The bottom, the depth at the dock, and whether a dock is permitted.
Access, and access in February. How you reach it, who maintains that route, and whether it is plowed.
What sits next door that the photographs left out of frame.
Then you get an honest read, including when it means do not bother.
The Town Around It
Fetch Brewing downtown is in the old 1912 State Bank, and the original vault is still inside it. Hanson Hill Waterfront Grill sits on the water, in the spot people here still call Mylan's. Pekadill's has been doing ice cream and sandwiches since 1983.
The paved rail trail runs through town, and beside it, by the White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, there is an old caboose sitting out. That one is not on anybody's list of things to see. You just come across it.
More on the town is on the Whitehall area page. The other half of the White Lake area is waterfront in Montague, and the general questions are on buying waterfront.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take a boat from Duck Lake out to Lake Michigan?
No. Duck Lake sits beside Lake Michigan and is joined to it by a shallow channel, but a dam under the Scenic Drive bridge blocks the route. So it runs into Lake Michigan as water and not as a boat route. If running out to the big lake from your own dock is part of the plan, that rules Duck Lake out and points you at White Lake instead.
Is the city of Whitehall on Lake Michigan?
The city itself sits about five miles inland. A Whitehall address can reach the Lake Michigan shore, because out here the mailing address covers far more ground than the city limits. Both of those are true and they are different claims, which is worth knowing before you compare two listings that both say Whitehall.
What is Tannery Bay?
It is the stretch of White Lake on the Whitehall side, named for a tannery that stood there until it was torn down decades ago. If you are standing on the walkway at Goodrich Park looking at boats and houses across the water, you are looking at the Montague side; Tannery Bay is the shore you are standing on.

What waterfront looks like in Whitehall
Four waters on one address: White Lake and the channel, the White River, Duck Lake, and Lake Michigan five miles west of the city.
Whitehall and Montague together are what locals call the White Lake area, one place with two names on opposite shores. Whitehall is the south side, with Goodrich Park and the municipal marina running along the water downtown.
One fact decides a lot of purchases here. A dam under the Scenic Drive bridge blocks the boat route between Duck Lake and Lake Michigan, so Duck Lake reaches the big lake as water and not as a route. White Lake does, through the channel.
